The Jacana Literary Foundation and the Other Foundation are proud to announce the 2022 recipient of the Gerald Kraak Prize for Writing and Photography of African Perspectives on Gender, Social Justice, and Sexuality. Congratulations to Udeh-Ubaka Roy (L), whose essay, 'Until It Doesn't' scooped the coveted prize in Cape Town on Africa Day, 25 May 2022.
The Gerald Kraak Prize was launched in 2016 in honour of anti-apartheid activist and social justice champion Gerald Kraak (19562014). Over 200 entries were received from 20 African countries, showcasing the most provocative works of fiction, poetry, journalism, photography and academic writing on the African continent. For the first time, the finalists worked with mentors and outstanding authors in their own right, Shaun de Waal, Makhosazana Xaba, and Sandile Ngidi. Finally, an excellent judging panel comprised of Ellah Pedzisai Wakatama (Kenya), Mark Gevisser (South Africa, pictured) and Otosirieze Obi-Young (Nigeria) had the difficult task of selecting the winner and runner-up.
Udeh-Ubaka Roy is the fourth recipient of the Gerald Kraak Prize and will take home USD 2,000, with Ukamaka Olisakwe receiving the runner up prize of USD500 for 'Slut' and 'The Grasscutters Curse.' The remaining finalists received USD200 each.
